Why is tennis not as popular as golf?
I live in sunny Southern California. Last Saturday I was on a public tennis court from 9 to 11 AM. During that time, we were the only ones playing - only 1 out of 8 courts were being used! On my drive back home, I saw that there was a huge backup at the starting tee on a local public golf course -- the place was packed! Tennis is my game - I cannot imagine what golf has over tennis. What am I missing here?

I do not agree with you.Your view may be in the context of one or two countries, but generally tennis is more popular in the all countries compared to golf. The attendance to see a grand slam match will prove it.secondly the rules of tennis are simple and the result of the match comes in short time ,unlike golf where the competition stretches for days .
I think Tiger Woods has taken the world by storm. Because of that golf has quickly become one of the most popular sports in the world. I've even seen more minorities playing (which is a great thing) but also more hackers which tends to slow up play. It just shows you how one great athlete can inspire hackers at any age to try it out for themselves.
I love tennis, too. Roger Federer doesn't have the same appeal as Tiger, even tho' I think his winning streak is the most impressive going on in sports. The competition level isn't there anymore. It tends to make men's tennis rather boring to watch on TV. Ladies' tennis is more competitive, better to look at, the fundamental qualities are really better than the mens' tour, but who can compete against Tiger & golf? When he's playing and on TV the ratings skyrocket. Tennis is popular where I live, but golf is more popular & more of a mental challenge.
golf is not more popular than tennis. Notice golf can't be broadcasted on television during peak ratings periods, but tennis can. I agree though people are primarily lazy, and would choose an easier sport where they didn't have to raise a sweat. Tennis is also not as social a game as golf, golf can be done next to your mates, whereas tennis is played on opposite ends.
Because people are inadvertently lazy. Tennis requires some fitness to play while golf does not. Many golfers think that it is a good excercise when it isn't. You do not need to keep yourself at a healthy weight to play golf, while it would surely hurt you in tennis. There is no need to try and stay in shape for golfing because it won't affect your game much, while the opposite is true for tennis. Golf is simply easier than tennis.
Tennis was much more popular than golf in the late 80s, early 90s. Then Tiger came along and golf was cool. Combine that with the fact that tennis became very boring to watch on TV in the 90s. I remember waiting to play on public courts. Now, you don't even see anybody playing, even on the nicest of days.
Well, I live in Northern California, and it usually depends on what season up here. A lot of people play during the fall over here; so much that one time we had to wait over a half hour to get courts. It doesn't seem like much but still, there were tons of people waiting. It probably just depends on the season. I think tennis will get more popular as people actually know what its about. And uhm, more youths are getting into tennis, so I guess it'll influence more and more people. I personally think that golf's for older people and it's boring.
I'd say bowling is probably the most popular. Maybe I'm biased as a bowler, but I still think that's the one that people play most often. My high? 289. Had the front 10, then came in high on the 11th shot to leave the 4-pin. Made the spare for 289. So close! One day I'll get my real bowling score up there. Maybe I'll shoot 300 before I shoot Wii 300, I don't know.
Most people are focused more on concentration (like people in golf) and some people like to move around more (like in tennis.) Even though both require strategy, technique, and practice, it is totally up to the preference of different players in different areas.
in the U.S. golf is more popular than tennis. but outside, tennis is the more popular sport. especially european and latin american countries. why? because of tiger woods. the popularity of golf risen sharply after the entrance of tiger in the pga. before that its tennis that is more popular than golf. compare tiger woods to andy roddick and james blake in terms of popularity appeal.
because golf can be played to an old age
