Is a dress size 6 (UK sizes) ...?

...a sign that I am petite? Because I am 5'6, 24 years old and dress size 6/8. Someone said it doesn't mean I am petite

  • i think thats about normal, maybe slighlty under. but i'd say your still a healthy enough size to not have to worry!

  • Petite in dresses usually mean you are under 5 ft 4 inches --so, it affects the length of your pants or skirt -- if you are talking about petite (small) as meaning small framed -- that is different because if you bought a petite size in a store, it would probably be too short for you. FYI...they have petite sizes even for like 12, 14, 16 (big-women) sizes.

  • Petite has nothing to do with size slim and not so slim. Petite is the opposite of not tall in french. say 5' -5'2" is small . Even if you were heavy but small you would still be a size petite.

    5'6" is definitely not petite.

If you are buying pants, it will be written the lengh of the leg on the label. That should give you an indication of the height

  • It's a very small size, but that doesn't make you petite.

Being petite genearlly means short AND small. 5ft6 at a size 6/8 might be small, but you are not short so therefore not petite.

And in retail, petite means sizes for shorter women under 5ft4 regardless of their size. Petite sizes reguarly go from a size 6 to a size 16.

  • it doesnt mean you're petite.

    you're like really tall.

petite people are little (5"2 and under) and smaller than an 8.

    I'm petite (5"2 and size 4/6)

    you have to be short!

  • It's slightly small because I'm 6/8 but I'm 13. A long as you eat the right amount of food and you don't look anorexic then I wouldn't complain. Girls would kill to have that size so be glad that you are only 6/8. The best place to shop if you are slim is Jane Norman because all of the sizes are small and the clothes are really pretty.

  • It makes you slim and the kind of women fat birds like me envy :)

(Three kids later I doubt my right leg is a six!)

Petite in clothing usually refers to height though, usually under 5' 3". You can get 'petite' size 16's. It's to do with leg and body length.

The actual dictionary definition is as follows:

    1. (of a woman) short and having a small, trim figure; diminutive.

    2. a category of clothing sized for women or girls of less than average height and with average or diminutive figures.

    3. a garment in such a size: The petites are on that rack.

    4. a woman or girl who wears clothing of such a size.

  • I have a foreign fiance. I would like to buy her a dress and some other clothes for a gift. I do not understand women's sizing at all. She is roughly 5'3" 32x28x33. Her pants measure at 39", I assume this is waist to cuff. Sleeves are 24". She tells me her pant size is 28 and sweater, shoes are 38. I do not know how to use her measurements to find a dress size. The clothing sizes 28 and 38 I can not find here in America. Can someone Please help me?

  • its not really petite cos youre not short, but it is a small size, 8-10 is more common/average size.

  • im 15 and size 6/8 & 5'4

yes you are petite but aslong as you EAT

and look a HEALTHY slim rather than POORLY skinny

    then thats fine :)

  • i'm 5"4 and a size 4/6,

    but i wouldn't say i'm petite :\
