WHY IS EMO So BROAD???

nobody ever really knows what "emo" is.

What's this EMO thing all about?

how about EMO music? is there really such thing as EMO music? i mean songs and lyrics are made emotionally (with feelings) so that they feel what they are doing and make good music..

so, how do we categorize EMO from other music genre??

how about the lifestyle? the dark look. wearing dark clothes, makeup. guys wearing black eye liner and black nail polish with their hair coming down in front of their face..

Do you think EMO should be classified as a fashion style rather than a music genre??

NOW I"M CONFUSED!!

  • I'll try to help you understand what it's all about :)

----The Emo music scene originated from a form of punk/indie/post-hardcore music before the 2000's. It gets the name "Emo" from what the genre is most known for, and that stands for EMOtional. I'm not talking about the whiny, crying type of emotional (as MANY tend to think it is)...But as in a type of music that shows EMOtion. Many of the lyrics in 'Emo' songs are bold, aggressive, and tend to show much more emotion than most other songs and bands do in different genres. Screamo is also what Emo music is known for, as well.

But, people mistakenly tend to label certain people (along with bands) into the 'Emo' genre because if the way their hair looks, for the way they dress, or simply just misinterpretation of what Emo truly is.

"Emo" has also began to be turned into a popular style/trend within the past few years. How it got started? I believe the style originated from the the trend-setter band members in the beginning of the whole 'Emo Scene' years back. Their style reflected on all of their hardcore fans, and that's pretty much how the style got started. In every genre of music, everyone has their own style; (Rap, Pop, Country, Rock, Metal, Emo...).

They all are very much different when it comes to the way they look. So, I can see how the Emo style came about, which is from the form of music...Just like any other genre does.

  • Just like many words, I think emo has several definitions. It can be used as a genre for music, though its a bit broad. It can also be used as a fashion style, now at least that one is more or less, well defined.

Emo is so broad because, you've said it, it is broad. Language is dynamic, thus, the usage of a word evolves depending on the members of the population using the word.

  • I LOVE THE EMO LOOK!!!!!!

i wear the skinny jeans.i wear black nail polish.i wear A LOT of black. and i wear my hair in my face to the point that some people have never seen my right eye!!!!

im not saying im emo, im just saying that there is more to it than you can imagine. i hang with the cutters at my school and they dont call themselfs emo either.....even tho that is what everyone else calls us.

    :(

emo is short for emotion and there are guys that are better at showing their emotions than others, and that doesnt mean their gay!!!!!Every one is different and can show their difference in the world in all sorts of ways. Some people say its a fashion style, others call it a music genre, and yet to others its unexplainable how they deffine it for themselves. And,oooooo plz,,, do not think its a weekness. the word "emo" is viewed in many different ways by many different people.
