Disrespectful to wear BDU?

I wore my father's Marines BDU to school today (I'm a sophomore) and a girl (senior) wearing a Marine Corps T-Shirt came up to me and asked why I was wearing it. I told her it was my dad's and that he was a Marine and she said, "Okay, it's just like, really disrespectful." It's short sleeved and it still has the rank on it, so I just said, "Okay" and walked away. I was wearing it open over a button-up and a skirt... Is it really as disrespectful as she made it out to be? I definitely won't be wearing it to school again, that's for sure.

  • If you take the insignia off, it would be fine.

And I also think the senior needs to take a chill pill. It's not like you were impersonating a Marine.

  • Okay, while wearing the jacket its self is fine, the Rank, and anything pin-on should be removed before you wear it. This would mean the rank and so forth. You didn't earn those and shouldn't wear those. My brother borrows my old field jacket from time to time, and before I let him out with it, I remove the flag, combat patch, and rank (I have the ACU's where everything Velcro's on). I know on that uniform some things are sown on, and that's acceptable, but the Rank is a no-go. It's not like you are trying to wear a complete uniform, nor trying to impersonate a Marine, and it didn't belong to like your Uncle or anything so I could understand the wear of it as long as it was properly sterilized. Additionally someone mentioned Uniform Regulations, if my memory serves me correctly it is ONLY applicable to the current service uniforms, the Marines don't wear BDU any longer (at least the last time I checked) therefore you should be fine on that aspect as well!

  • Just don't wear anything military issued. Even if it's legal to do so, people will always have different opinions of what's acceptable. Just best to not get into the pointless drama. Just wear regular clothes..

  • Yeah, it sort-of is.

Uniform regulations aren't binding on civilians but they DO tell us what the military thinks about civilian use of uniform items.

You are "authorized" wear of military uniform items AS A UNIFORM while you participate in appropriate organizational activities like Civil Air Patrol & ROTC or for costume purposes as an actor. At no other point are you "authorized" wear of any uniform item.

  • no way is it being disrespectful. take off the rank but patches can stay. i would wear it to show respect to my dad and all military members. nobody likes it, too bad. they can kiss my azz and fck off.

  • Your impersonating a soldier.

  • sort of, more along the lines of being a poser would be my 1st thought........you do NOT wear a uniform that you have not earned,........................but that is just my personal opinion.

  • YES! YOU are NOT a Marine !
