Do Mason jars preserve Hot Chocolate powder?

My family loves hot chocolate. We drink it pretty much every day! If I put it in a big Mason jar, do you think the hot chocolate mix would last until- say, Christmas?

  • Any glass jar with a screw on lit will work just as well, and save the Mason Jars for preserving foods. I keep mine in a clean glass jam jar and it works well for months at a time as I don't drink it very often.

    Chetak

  • Dry ingredients last forever if they're protected against humidity.

Some things I keep in mason jars:

Dried chile pods. They're not completely dry. A mason jar keeps them that way.

Ketchup: I buy a big can and fill jars with it. They'll keep in the cupboard for months. Just make sure the ketchup doesn't touch the metal lids.

Bay leaves. I pick a bunch whenever I find a bay tree. Also, dried parsley, basil and other garden herbs.

  • I make a huge can of it in the fall and it lasts till its gone.

NONE of the ingredients in hot cocoa mix expire and as long as the powder stays dry it will be good. EVENTUALLY it might start smelling old but that would take years, not weeks.

This recipe I am going to post is similar to mine except I use French vanilla flavored creamer. It gives it an extra good flavor.

    Ingredients:

    10 cups dry milk powder

4 3/4 cups sifted confectioners' sugar

1 3/4 cups unsweetened cocoa powder

    1 3/4 cups powdered non-dairy creamer

    Directions:

    1. In a large mixing bowl, combine milk powder, confectioner's sugar, cocoa powder, and creamer. Stir till thoroughly combined. Store cocoa mixture in an airtight container. Makes about 15 cups mix, or enough for about 45 servings.

    2. For 1 serving, place 1/3 cup cocoa mixture in a coffee cup or mug, and add 3/4 cup boiling water. Stir to dissolve. Top with dollop of whipped cream or a few marshmallows, if desired

  • absolutely. Hot chocolate powder can last for months or even years. You can use mason jars, or any sealable plastic containers to keep it on your shelf for a long time.
