Windows Server 2008 vs Linux Fedora?

I want to know what the similarities and differences are between the two NOS's (Network Operating Systems). Which do you think is better and why? I heard Fedora is better because it is newer but I am not sure how much better it is.

  • Fedora is really a desktop system - it prioritises new features and user interface / apps rather than server-grade stability.

There is nothing to stop you using it on a server, but there is little point.

The server equivalent is CentOS - that's an "Enterprise class" system intended for ultimate reliability.

My company uses Centos on servers, both for our own use and for customers - we will not use any Windows OS on a server under any circumstances.

    Some of the reasons are:

Stability - A well configured Linux system will run without reboots until the hardware needs updating..

Security - Linux is near proof against viruses and hacking etc., while Windows has more holes than a sieve.. Any security problems in Linux are typically fixed in days rather than months.

Cost - Centos is free, all the services can handle any number of users without any licencing or limits.

Included / available facilities - just about any facility or service you can ever imagine on a server for any function is either included or a free download. A lot of things are extra / licensed / restricted users on Windows servers.

CPU power - The graphical interface is a separate "layer" on linux that you don't have to run - it's usually a waste on a server as many run without connected monitors.

Once configured, you can do everything via a remote SSH connection - I use Putty from a Win 7 desktop to admin our servers.

I'd estimate that for many general server functions, a Linux machine needs around 1/3 the CPU power compared to a Windows machine performing the same task..

  • Wow, thank you! Just what I was looking for. I looked for the answers on the internet but I couldn't find them.
