How do I read my tires?

I want to buy tires but don't know what all those numbers mean. This is what my tire says 205/55R16 91H What does this mean?

  • 205 is the width of the tire in millimeters; 235 is 20mm wider than a 205

55 is the aspect ratio.. the height of the sidewall; so a 55 series tire is shorter than a 75 series tire

16 is the rim diameter in inches

91 is the load index.. 1356lbs in this application

H is the speed rating... 130mph in this application

A 235/55R16 is wider AND taller than a 205/55R16. This is because you are 20mm wider, and since the sidewall is a percentage of the width, your sidewall will be taller as well.

Also if you were to compare a 205/55R16 to a 205/55R17, the 17 would be the taller tire, but the same width.

Here is a page that has the charts for the load index and speed ratings of a tire.

  • 205 is the heighth of the tire, 55 is the width, and 16 is the rim size that the tire needs which is a 16" rim, and I don't know what the 91H is.

  • You just need to go to a tire shop and they will tell you.
