A PS3 or a regular Blu-ray/DVD player?
So my mom has given me a mission to find a reliable Blu-ray player that also plays regular DVDs that we will be getting for Christmas. While on my quest a friend reminded me on how PS3 game systems play DVD and Blu-ray.
So what would be better? Of course, a PS3 would be the better deal for most, but I doubt we will be playing many games on it and would be mostly using it for movies. However, if its at a similar price and its just as good as a regular Blu-ray/DVD player, we'll most likely end up getting that because of how it can play games too.
Then what model to get? Theres quite a few models on the market i'm finding that can play both types of discs, and I noticed even the PS3 has quite a few models to chose from as well. But what model to get? Hopfully something affordable, but not too cheap (as cheapest models of any electronic devices are crap normally).
I also see there are players that play VHS too. Its not required, but a player that plays VHS too would be nice to have on hand. While we very rarely watch VHS tapes anymore these days, we still have a rather large collection of them. But once again, its not required, as we have at least one VHS player in the house already.
So what are your 2 cents?

The PS3 is a much better media player.
PS3 used to be the recommended choice as a Blu-ray player, HOWEVER, as prices (and capability) of stand alone (SA) players have improved this is no longer the case. The PS3, while a good Blu-ray player (3D capable, fast loading, good performance), is a mediocre DVD player, it uses 6X the electricity of most SA players, has an unusual form and requires an RF remote (cost of console plus remote ~$300). The only way a PS3 is a good choice these days is if the buyer needs the capabilities (3D Blu-ray, DVD, SACD, CD player, media player, game console) and is willing to pay a relatively high price. If all you want/need is a capable Blu-ray/DVD/CD player you can get one for under $100. Panasonic players are well regarded. Even a 3D player (which also requires a 3D HDTV and special glasses) with media. streaming movie capability can be had for $150. And unlike PS3's SA Players all "match" normal HT components.
If you want the best Blu-ray player look at the Oppo lineup ... more expensive, but far superior to a PS3.
Ps3- Blue Ray, Music, Games, Photos, Netflix, Internet Browser.
Blue Ray DVD- Watch Blue Ray movies.
Simple.
Well, yes only one main disadvantage, PS3 doesn't had build in HD audio decorder like some fancy pricey blue-ray player has it. But it don't matter if you have a receiver. But PS3 is almost future proof since has good update. But the price is the best of all, cost same as most blu-ray player and also play game..
Some of the newer blu-ray players, for example the sony ones also allow media playback from network devices and usb devices. Things such as music movie and photos. They also now have internet browsing, internet tv, apps and all sorts of other useful things. The only thing blu-ray dvd combo players can't do is play ps3 games.
