How do you solve this Algebra problem?

1/8(x - 16) + 1/5(x + 5) = x - 5

I would greatly appreciate if you could provide an explanation as to how you received your answer. Thanks!

  • Multiply both sides of the equation by 40

    5(x-16)+8(x+5)=40x-200

    Carry the coefficients through the parantheses

    5x-80+8x+40=40x-200

    collect like terms

    13x+120=40x-200

    320=27x

    solve for x

    x=(320/27)

  • LHS

    =(5*(x-16) + 8*(x+5)) / 8*5

    =(5x - 80 + 8x + 40) / 40

    = (13x - 40)

    RHS

    =40*(X-5)

    = (40X - 200)

    200 - 40 = 40x - 13x

    160 = 27x

    160/27 = x
