switching services branches after signing a contract?

i still want to serve, i know that army reserves isn't the branch for me. i don't have a ship date yet but i've sworn in and signed the contract. should i just inform my recruiter that i want out of my contract or tell him that i want to change branches? what is the process? also if you signed a army reserve contract are you automatically DEP?

  • Once you swear in and sign the contract that's it. But since it the Reserves, you can go Active Duty in six months from the time you report to your reserve unit. I don't know the process for National Guard switching or even if you can switch from Reserves to National Guard. Best of luck in your endeavors. The Army has a lot to offer and it's a great community and you'll meet a lot of different people.

  • My understanding is the contract isn't binding until you ship regardless of a contract or swearing in. You could talk to another recruiter and join something else preferible coast guard or air force.

You should know that once you try getting out of your contract your gonna get allot of empty threats from the recruiter. It's not unheard of then saying that your going to go to jail for ten years.

  • im pretty shure once you sign the contract you have to stick with it till it runs out, but talk to your recruiter, you may be able to work something out in the army, but i would guss switching branches is out of the question.
