  • sorry not read it yet, have read most of his stuff- but I plan too.

When Paulo Coelho was a young man, his parents had him committed to mental hospitals three times because he wanted to be an artist--an unacceptable profession in Brazil at the time. During his numerous forced incarcerations he vowed to write some day about his experiences and the injustices of involuntary commitment.

Coelho has created a fictional character named Veronika to tell his own story. The strength and tragedy of Veronika's fictional story was instrumental in passing new government regulations in Brazil that have made it more difficult to have a person involuntarily committed. Its on my to-do list when I get some spare time (sic) to read it. I can reccomend the Devil and Miss Prym from his writings lol.

  • Veronika Decides to Die (Portuguese Veronika decide morrer) is a novel by Paulo Coelho; it tells the story of 24 year old Veronika, who appears to have everything in life going for her, but who decides to kill herself.

This book is partly based on Coelho's experience in various mental institutions (see the biography Confessions of A Pilgrim by Juan Arias). It is based around the subject of madness.

The gist of the message is that "collective madness is called sanity".

Veronika Decides to Die has been adapted for theatre a number of times.

The title Veronika Decides to Die was adapted by Danish Metal band Saturnus in 2006, as they released their third studio album titled Veronika Decides To Die.

    Hope this helps.
