There's no question that Nash is a below average defender, to put it nicely. I don't think that's because of a lack of talent or a lack of desire. Nash played for most of his career under Don Nelson and Mike D'Antoni. Those are perhaps the two worst defensive coaches in the history of the game. Each of them is in love with their offensive schemes, and only pays lip service to the idea of "defense".
I think if Nash had played for a few years with a good defensive team and a good defensive coach, he'd be at least an acceptable defender.
Not very good. He's never been able to stay in front of anybody and never compensated by being a big steals guy, like Stockton or Iverson. Teaming him up with Amare Stand-and-Admire for the better part of a decade was exciting to watch on one end, but defensively they looked like a 5-on-3 power play out there.
