  • Let her son's age is x years, then her age will be (x+34) years,and

    x+(x+34) =35

    2x+34 =35

    2x =35-34 =1

    x =1/2 years.

    Ms. Chan's son's age =1/2 years.

  • Ms Chan's son is 0.5 years old, while Ms Chan is 34.5 years old. Think about it carefully! In this scenario, Ms Chan is exactly 34 years older than her son, and their ages add to 35.

    The problem could NOT have been 1, because their ages would have been 1 and 34, but then Ms Chan would only be 33 years older than her son, not 34 as it states in the problem.

  • Ms. Chan's son is 6 months old; Ms. Chan's age is 34 years, 6 months.

  • Let x be the son's age.

    Ms Chan's age will be 34 + x

    x + 34 + x = 35

    2x = 1

    x = 0.5

    Her son is six months old.

  • Ms. Chan's Age = x

    Son's Age = y

    x + y = 35....................Eq. 1

    x = y + 34....................Eq. 2

    Sub y + 35 from Eq. 2 for x in Eq. 1:

    y + 34 + y = 35

    2y + 34 = 35

    2y = 35 - 34

    2y = 1

    y = 1/2

    Ms. Chan's son is 6 mos. old.

    ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

  • ms chan son = y

    ms. chan = 34 + 4

    34 + 2y

    ________ = 35

    2

    34 + 2y = 70

    2y=36

    y=18

  • the son is 0.5 ( half a year old )

    0.5+ 34= 34.5 ( moms age)

    34.5 + .5 = 35
