toyota camry code 71 engine problem?

my 1992 toyota camry has a code 71 problem.

someone on here suggested that i should clean the EGR valve, etc.

pep boys mechanic told me that i have to pay 89 dollars to have it diagnosed.

1. so should i just go to a mechanic, and ask him to clean the egr valve only? i am clueless about cars, so i can't probably clean the valve myself.

2. can i buy those system cleaner products at those auto shops, and just put it in without cleaning the system manually?

thanks.

  • I just happen to have my 1992-1996 Haynes Camry Repair Manual open here :

Code 71 is EGR gas temperature signal is too low. ( I guess you already know this )

Trouble area possibilities are the EGR Valve itself, The Vacuum Hose to the Egr Valve, The EGR

Temperature Sensor or circuit.. Could also be the Vacuum Switching Valve for the EGR circuit.

or even the ECM = Electronic Control Module ( unlikely )..but possible.

I would start off with checking the condition of your vacuum hoses first. If you don't find any cracks

or loose connections, leaks etc.. Take it to a reputable mechanic for repair. This should be a relatively simple fix. Forget about Pep Boys. Go to a privately owned repair mechanic that has a

good reputation. If they tell you it's the ECM ( find a used one at a local salvage yard )

    Good Luck

  • Pistons do no longer basically grab whilst there is lubricant working by your engine. That mechanic does not understand something approximately your motor vehicle. there is an oil sludge difficulty this is everyday by ability of Toyota on Camrys of that classic. despite if, I doubt that the difficulty is that the two. The sludge situations i've got heard approximately had headgasket failure linked with it. once you pronounced the clicking and the RPMs dropping, that appeared like electric or timing to me. Have your timing belt checked and your battery. additionally, have your starter and ignition examined. At 56K miles, your Camry hasn't even broken in yet those are automobiles that are sturdy for a minimum of 300K miles. Get a 2d opinion.
