I think society values paramedics, and I know society can't function without parametics. They are the first responders and are a very very valuable asset in the health care industry.
Society had functioned very well, in the past, without paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians. The difference is that fewer people have to die, compared to that past.
So, if you ask the same question of the people, alive today, and their families, the answer would be obvious.
