can a dog survive distemper?

its a 9 months old GSD and has been dignosed with distemper today. we're in sounth america and the treatmen may not be the same or available as in other countries. I dont know if he has ever been vaccinated against it. We got him (out of)from an awful place. They said hes vacinated, but had not record of it to hand us. Since we got him he had not been well enough long enough to get his vaccines, the vet said we must cure the other stuff first. Then we were moving and never took him the day we should and now i hear it takes about a week for the symptoms to apear after infection and it looks like he would be just got vaccinated in time(10 days ago). so far hes got fever, runny stools, discharge from nose and eyes and heavy breathing(but its 37-40 C these days)..sometimes he cant walk in straight line other than that after the injections he got today he seemed little better. but now im up observing him and he doesnt look too good... he had like one single twich so far(or maybe it was not, maybe im panicing). The vet said if its mild distemper 3 days of her shots will cure him, but if its advanced like affecting nervouse system he will die. we went home like happy that hes getting better, but then ive read on internet what distemper actually is and im.. do I have to prepare myself ? we didnt have him long, but we love him so much. also we had to pay the bastards a lot of money to take this doggy away from them. and he was so good.learned his new name and stoped being affraid of people.. its just not fair. please if theres any hope i want to hear that.

  • Can they survive? Yes. Do they survive often? Not once symptoms are severe. Distemper is a virus. It can't be cured. It has to run its course, the only treatments are supportive. Usually, antibiotics are given to help prevent and fight secondary bacterial infection. The dog is usually put on intravenous fluids. They give anti-nausea meds, and anti-diarrheals. And then also anti-convulsants if he begins to seize. Unfortunately, distemper has two stages. Your dog is in the first stage. After about a week, many dogs seem to improve. However, many dogs relapse around week two or three when the virus reaches the nervous system. Stage two is when the neurological symptoms will appear. It's said distemper has around a 50% survival rate, but most of those survivors had little to no symptoms.

At this point, all you can do is treat the symptoms and hope. Best of luck, I hope he is one of the lucky individuals that survive.

  • i'm afraid that i haven't any genuine suggestion for you, as i understand little or no with regards to the ailment (others right here look to appreciate *plenty* greater effective than I do). If it delivers any wish, even inspite of the undeniable fact that, some years in the past I had a neighbor whose grownup dogs had distemper (their dogs had additionally been a stray). It became a coarse bout getting in direction of the ailment, however the dogs finally recovered and lived to a ripe previous age. I submit to in strategies, inspite of the undeniable fact that, that the dogs necessary a sturdy deal of care (I look to remember that my neighbor replaced the dogs's bedding particularly frequently to decrease the possibility of reinfection?). Do a great style of examine, and don't hear to the naysayers. I do want you and your eye-catching dogs nicely... you're doing the artwork of angels. besides the fact that happens in the tip (besides the fact that if he recovers or no longer), you are able to sense sturdy understanding that this damaging misplaced dogs now knows what this is choose to be enjoyed and cared for.
