First let me tell you that I own a pest control company and what I will recommend is the complete treatment that should help you completely get rid of the fleas.
First, treat the pet with Capstar. This is a pill that you get from the vet that will kill all of the fleas that get on the animal for the first 24 hours. Second, use either Frontline or Advantage, these can also be purchased from the vet. Frontline can be used on pets 12 weeks old or older. Advantage can be used on animals as young as 6 weeks. If the pet is old enough for either product, switch back and forth between the two. One month use one, the next use the other. The reason I recommend this is that there are two main types of fleas that infest pets. One product works better on the first type and the other product works better on the second type. By using both, you make sure you have covered all your bases.
Once the pet has been treated, you must treat your home and yard. The best products to do this would include not only a killing agent, but also a sterilization agent. Inside, I would use Ultracide, if you can get it. (Many on line sites sell it.) Follow the instructions on the label! Wash all animal’s bedding and vacuum frequently. Throw out the vacuum bag or dump the catch container after every vacuuming. You can never vacuum too much! DO NOT STEAM CLEAN YOUR RUGS! This can hatch flea eggs and make your problem worse.
Outside I would use Demon WP mixed with Gentrol or Nylar, carefully following label instructions. Treat the entire yard, paying special attention to under bushes and low hanging branches. Most of these products can be bought at any Do-It-Yourself Pest Control company either on line or in a store.
Treating your house and yard is just as important as treating the pet!
It is also very important to stay away from the grocery store or box store products like Zodiac or Hartz. Many of these products can cause severe allergic reactions in animals.
I have fleas at the moment and here is the worst part. Once you get a flea inside your house you are in trouble. Each female flea can lay as many as 45 eggs a day. When the eggs hatch the larvae feed on the parents' feces and then pupates. This is when the flea is wrapped in a cocoon, like a butterfly. But unlike a butterfly, fleas come out of the cocoon when they think the time is right -- either because of temperature or humidity or because they sense movement or carbon dioxide from an animal exhaling. Fleas can stay in a cocoon for as long as 200 days. So if you have had fleas in the past or even one female flea got in on your dog before you started treating him, then this could be why you have fleas now. And for getting rid of them listen to the first guy -- great advice.
Yup, there very well could be fleas in your house.. They need blood, to survive, doesn't matter if it's yours or the dogs.. They need dog blood to reproduce.. Yours is fine for a meal.. Have to get vacuuming and cleaning up the fleas / eggs etc.. Throw the vacuum cleaner bag away when you are done.. They have a few life cycles so you'll have to keep it up til they are gone.. You might talk to someone about a premise spray that is safe..
Someone could have had the fleas on them when they came thru your door.
Or, do you have wood sub-floors? If an animal can get under the house and has fleas the area under the floors can become infested and work their way into your house thru the floors and carpet. You may need to call an exterminator for this one. Fleas can lie dormant for six months and then spring into action when the warm weather hits.
You can track in fleas on your shoes, the dog can track them in. I would recommend going to the vet and buying a can of spray for the carpet (but the vet strength), vacuum the carpet, spray and vacuum again. You might have to repeat if the fleas have laid eggs.
matbe your bringing them in from out sude do you have a cat or rabbit. fleas like more thasn just dog blood . maybe a few escape when you bath your dog and are just roaming around. try getting flea spary for your yard and home. and vacum and wipe down hard areas. like wood floor desk any hard top.
i went throught this with my dog and it took about a month before we fianlliy killed of the fleas
