It depends on your account, but you should have in your settings a vacation response or something that will allow you to alert people you are on vacation. There maybe an option to control that too.
Do not try to close your account, you will never be able to get it back. So, leave it open while you are gone, but inform your friends of your plans.
You can write a note stating you will be on vacation during those certain dates. Save it in your 'Draft' box. When you ar ready to send it, then place your own E-mail address in the 'To;' line. Then add as many of your contact addresses as you can in the 'Bcc" line. 'Bcc' is for blind carbon copy, and no one can see the other names or addresses of the others. The 'Cc' is carbon copy, which does the same thing but they can see all the other names and addresses that you used. The 'Bcc' option is safe, security conscience, very convenient and also easy. Now, you must press and hold the 'shift' key while you click on the 'Send' button, if you want to continue to save the message in your 'Draft' box. You send it as many times as you need to until all of your contacts are informed.

You can put an auto-reply on there that says you are away but unless you control your mail-server you cannot just remove your email address.
