Am I a slow reader???

I really wanna know because i know of people who can finish a book within 5 straight hours!!! I really envy them because I just finished Twilight but it took me like 1 week? It's because I only read every night for 2 hours. I don't feel like reading a book for 5 straight hours because I just feel uncomfortable and I feel dizzy!!! My aim is to be a fast reader who can finish a book for 5 straight hours without getting dizzy or something!!! Please give me some advise!!! It makes me depressed that I'm such a slow reader and can't even read a book for 2 straight hours!!

Update:

Thanks for the answers guys!!! But do you think if I get my eyes checked and I'll use glasses, it will be easier for me?? Even though I hate wearing glasses, I'll probably wear just to make myself read books faster and not feeling dizzy. What do you think?

  • I used to read really fast. I used to read 4 or 5 books a week. But when it came down to it, although I really enjoyed them, I would always forget what they were about so I obviously wasn't taking them in. Now I've slowed it down. I make a book last a week (or 2 if it's a big one!) and I now I don't have to re-read them to remember the story!!

So don't worry about being a fast reader. If you find reading for 2 hours a day enjoyable then do it! It doesn't have to be a race, and just because other people read a book in one sitting doesn't mean they're getting more enjoyment out of it than you are!

Reading should be a pleasure, forcing yourself to read til you are dizzy isn't fun! And you are probably taking more of it in than the people who read for 5 hours!!

  • It depends on the book rather than the reader. if you find a book very absorbing and you cant put it down then you may just spend how many ever hours so that you may finish it.Some people would rather go slowly and relish the suspense and the language.Rather than just finishing a book you should READ it .

Reading a book really fast is not all that big a deal but if it still means so much to you try the following

-In stead of reading every single word, just glance through the sentences so that you just get a general idea. Practice makes perfect, eventually you will just have to glance through to understand the line

-Take breaks in which you look at your surrounding .This is to avoid getting dizzy

-Read in good light. This tries your eyes less

-Relax!!!!!!!!!!! If you sit down intending and pushing your self to finish a book it is most likely that you wont.

hope this helped and take being a slow reader as a compliment. i am a really slow reader and am proud of it

  • Don't worry. I have problems reading, except when i love the book, which i did with The Twilight Series. I read all day and half the night. But being a faster reader isn't always good. If i read fast i find that i skip words and don't pick up the meaning as much.

Everyone reads differently. Like i have to mouth some things, cause i find it hard to concentrate with noise around. Just read at your own pace and savour the other two books. You have till August till the next one comes out.

  • I don't think you should worry about your reading speed. Everyone reads at a different pace, some people can finish a book in a day, others will finish it in a week. You can't force yourself to read by saying "I have to read 5 hours straight so I can finish this book" because you'll be stressing over something very stupid and small. You'll find that you will enjoy something better if you do it when you want, without any pressures to finish what it is you're doing (in this case, reading).

So just go at your own pace and enjoy whatever it is you're reading, and don't worry about how fast others read, because everyone has a different reading style.

    Enjoy!

    :)

  • You're not a slow reader. Everyone reads a book at their own pace. Actually, scientists have found that people who read right before they go to sleep tend to retain more memory of what exactly was read. I speed through some books and meander through others. Actually, the ones that take me the longest to read are the ones I'm most truly enjoying and hate to end. When reading non-fiction, I often begin reading in the middle, read to the end, then start at the beginning. Reading a book in one five-hour sitting isn't a goal you should be striving to attain....unless you've postponed opening a book you were assigned to read and end up having to cram.

  • Don't worry about it. My wife can read a book a day if she's really into it. Me on the other hand have been reading a small 300 page book for a couple of months now. I'm like you, want to be a faster reader but thats not how it is. I don't worry about it.

  • I love reading, I am a fast reader and read at least 1 hour a night before i go to bed, no matter how late that is. My girlfriend calls me a nerd because I read so much, and she can tell when I am reading cause im in my own little world and she has to work to get my attention lol.

  • People that read that fast are skimming a great deal of the book. Newspaper and magazine articles are meant to be skimmed. Books are for pleasure and should be savored. You are /not/ a slow reader.

  • 2 hours a night sounds very disciplined to me. It doesn't matter how quick you read it's what you learn from the book and how much you enjoy the experience that counts.

  • i lurv reading books and ive found that one of the best ways of reading like that is CONNECTING with the story and having that on edge feeling that makes you feel like never putting your book own. you have to luv what your reading and read it because you want to ^^ anywayz u dont hav to prove yourself to anyone because we all read to just enjoy a story written from another :)
