Why is America's capital a district of Columbia?

When did we decide to include a district of the country of Columbia into our country. What purpose does this serve?

Update:

thank you for the inciteful look into that bit of history. I'm gonna close this off before I get another insult for my ignorance.

  • You are not serious, are you? It has nothing to do with that, anymore then Columbia University, Columbia Records, etc. Columbia is a derivative of Columbus, you do know who he was? The area is on the border of the Southern and Northern states. It has been around since the 1700's long before the Country got it's name of Columbia.

  • It is the exclusive Federal Zone; basically that means that it is an area that is not in any of the States, so that none of the States would have a claim on *having* the capital.

Also it was created so that Congress would not be under the Authority of any of the States, in a legal sense.

A lot of complex legal language would be required to explain it in detail.

  • That's where it was moved Years ago as a More Central Location of America at the time

  • It has nothing to do with the country of Columbia, but is rather a poetic reference to Christopher Columbus.

  • They wanted an example of a great city run by Democrats for decades. You know, low crime rate, great public schools - so good that our politicians kids don't attend them, fiscally sound - all of the successes that Democrats are famous for.

  • So that our government not be restricted by any one state's laws.
