How do you cook carrots?

I want to make regular cooked carrots. I don't want to sautee them, I don't want to use ANY type of oil (even if it's a small amount), and I don't want to use an oven.

I've tried boiling them in a pot of water, but they never get soft. Is there a certain way you're supposed to boil them? Just so they're soft. Thanks.

Update:

Okay, how long then?

  • Peel if required and chop into chunks, or slice, or dice.

I generally chop into 1" chunks and split them by length. (2 or 4 depending on fatness)

Cover with enough water and bring to a boil and reduce heat to a simmer for 15-20 minutes, depending upon the size of the pieces and how soft you want them.

  • Make sure you cut the carrots in bite size pieces. Place them in water just to cover and boil them, you probably haven't boiled them long enough.

Usually about 5-10 minutes. after about 5 minutes, stick a fork in them if they are soft they are done, if they are hard cook a little longer, keep doing this until they are the consistancy that you want.

  • I don't care for them soft, I like a little crunch left in. My favorite way is sliced thin then I cook over low heat in a covered pot with a little butter & brown sugar. If you want to try this leave out the butter. It only takes a few minutes but make sure you have a tight lid to hold the steam in. They will make their own syrup when cooked this way. Very tasty.

  • Well let's put it this way, you get almost if not less than half of the nutrition that you should've gotten from a non cooked carrot, so what's the point of eating it cooked? Well don't get me wrong though, I know everyone has their own tastes, so you are definitely entitled with yours, but I'm just clarifying.

  • You don't boil any veg till it gets soft, you'll cook the goodness right out of the carrot. Just boil them tops of 5 mins, and enjoy!

  • Hello there

First of all, carrots are not supposed to be boiled soft because then it taste terrible.

Slice each carrot in about equal sizes and cook them about 5 minutes. Let them be warm and crispy that's when carrots taste best.

  • Carrots are pretty thick, so it helps to cut them up into small, bite-sized portions to help them cook quicker. It can take quite a few minutes for them to go soft.

Alternatively, you can steam them instead of boiling them. This will still take a while.

  • You can try steaming the carrots

Edit : here's a website with the full recipe :-)

  • Slice them thinly and steam them, add a little honey when you serve them
