How do I treat gas naturally?

My husband and I have started eating a plant food based diet (basically became vegetarians) and a lot of the foods that we eat include foods that gives us gas. We can't eliminate the beans and grains cuz they're a large part of the diet. We don't want to take over the counter drugs as we are living a holistic lifestyle as well. Are there any other foods that can actually HELP with gas??? It's driving my husband crazy (it seems to be affecting him more).

Update:

WOW, every one of you who answered, your answers are very informative.

I won't be able to pick "best answer" cuz they are all excellent. Thanks sooo much!!!!!!!

  • A good digestive enzyme complex with Cellulase will help to break down the cellulose (the fiber) and Probiotics (the beneficial bacteria) can help with the absorption of nutrients, but it's very possible it's just from the extra fiber and you may need to drink more water as well. It also might be certain vegetables that you and/or your husband are sensitive (or allergic) to some of the plants that you're eating. Gas is typically caused by improper digestion, but that can be from allergies, insufficient enzyme levels, or low acid levels among many other things so it may be a bit difficult to narrow it down to just one answer, but these are the typical things that tend to work first. Good luck and I hope I helped!

[edit]: Miranda is right about yogurt being a readily available option for Probiotics, but they aren't really available as vegetarian options while there are some vegetarian capsules of Probiotics in pill form.

[edit 2]: Unfortunately how long it'll take will depend on each of your systems. Once you find the enzyme that helps to digest what you're not digesting properly, the Probiotic strain to help absorb the nutrients you're not absorbing, and/or the nutrient to quell the digestive upset in general, you should feel some relief shortly after... but finding the right one can take a while. Full relief may take a few days once you find what works and within a week or two, you'll likely feel MUCH better. I would suggest to give at least a good week for any given product you try to make sure you give it a fair shake. I hope that helps to clear it up!

  • Short resolution is to deal with the constipation and the cramping, for the reason that you might be constipated any ordinary menstrual cramps are going to be exaggerate, you can treat the constipation with gentle laxatives like senna, prunes or prune juice just don't over do it or you'll come to be with more gasoline and loose stools. Lamentably will take the simpler part of a day if not two. But that you can take ibuprofen to support manage the pain of cramping. You will have to also take into accounts the long run suggestions made via others to preclude this from going down again, this means that little now. So far as the gasoline for now let it cross (no pun intended), you also have got to drink plenty of water to get your physique back to traditional. In the event you get determined which you could take a fast performing laxative equivalent to magnesium citrate, or an enema from glycerin suppositories, or a cleaning soap enema (if in case you have in no way had a soap enema be certain you're taking to you mum or dad about it in case you are a minor if not comply with these instructional materials) soap enema: wash and dry your fingers Take a smooth bar of soap and cut of a sliver 1/four inch thick by using 1 inch lengthy rather moist the sliver Get a excellent preserve on it as it will be slippery cautiously slip it into your anus maintain your rectum as tight as viable for as long as viable (frequently about 5 to 10 minutes) After 5 to 10 minutes attempt to GO repeat half hour if no influence after the first time just right good fortune Oh incidentally no longer gross it's only a traditional operate of our our bodies

  • A radical change in diet will cause that. And it may even out over time, the body hasn't had a chance to adjust yet to the new diet. Eating some yogurt could help in the meantime. I assume you are still eating dairy as vegetarians. If not, you might want to taper back until the body has a chance to adjust, this could simply be a matter of too much too soon.

  • Go to your health food store and purchase a bottle of Probiotics.

Probiotics containing Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium also help relieve some digestive gas problems, because probiotics replace the bacteria that causes gas.

  • Tinctures, fennel,5ml, Angelica root 5ml, chamomile 5ml and gentian 5ml, mix and have one to tow teaspoons about 20 min before food. Helps like a charm.
