homemade turbo help?
would ataching a computer fan to the airfilter of a dirt bike act as a tubo except not run off the exhaust. like if i where to attach a computer fan to the air filter bay would i get any performance out of it.
Update:i didnt actually do it i was just wonderin because my friend had a similar idea but fo a go cart and it does make sense because its pressurizing the air filter chaber making more air go in

Actually the idea isn't as ridiculous as most of you think. Regardless of what type of pump you use to pressurize the intake, the whole idea is to force more cubic feet of air into the engine. A computer fan is surely too small, but electric fans don't have to run 100,000 rpm as suggested. Just run a bigger fan slower! Duh! On a carburated engine the carb would have to be enclosed in an air tight box and the air forced into the box as well as the carb or the carb sealed air tight and a fuel pump used producing more pressure than the maximum air pressure would be. Otherwise the air pressure will be higher than the fuel pressure and the result will be a too lean mix or no fuel delivery at all. Check out "1957-58 Studebaker Golden Hawk" and you'll find the system is well proven.
As has been noted this is not a good idea and would not work in the least (would probably be a big restriction.) However there are electric "superchargers" available for cars. Obviously they can't be used constantly since in order to get a compressor to be efficient it is generally spinning at 100,000+ rpm which would burn out a small electric motor rather quickly. These "superchargers" are pretty much a load of crap, however you can purchase them on ebay.
You have a similar idea, just about 100 times too small. And although a dirtbike engine can be 100 times smaller than a car engine, it doesn't mean that it doesn't need equivilent boost (it just needs less volume.)
At any rate, the tuning involved in making some sort of electric supercharger setup work on a dirtbike would be inefficient and time consuming, most likely resulting in engine damage.
Ultimately.... no... this wouldn't work at all.
The thing that amazes me about this question is the fact that they tell you its a "DIRT BIKE" rather than a road bike because that would make a difference................how Im not sure.. AND then they dont tell you what brand or the size of the bike they want to do it to...... seems some bikes have ram air systems... fuel injection.... but why would that make a difference??
AND the people answering this question... all seem to have missed the point that its not connected to the throtle at all....
TURBOS & SUPERCHARGES... are driven by the engine they are connected to.. turbos by the exaughst Gas.. & supercharges by belt drive from the crank. This means that as the engine increases in RPM the amount of air pumped in is greater....
so an electric fan hooked up to the intake would do SFA..
How are you going to power the computer and the fan? I assume you would use the power from the bike via the alternator. Fan motors take a lot of power to run. Your engine will be creating that power at the expense of horsepower. I wouldn't do it. The reason why turbos use exhaust pressure to power them is because it is practically free energy not being used. Superchargers are a lot simpler but they use engine belts to power them. Again, none of them use fan motors. So unless you figure out a way to run a fan (computers don't run things, they just control them) I wouldn't mess with it.
You'd lose power. A computer fan does not have power to create any pressure on the intake side. It would end up acting like a restriction. And when one of those blades snaps off be prepared to work on your engine.
iv done some geto **** but dam. if u want thet mutch powere get a biger bike or somthing. the best way to anwser questions like these is to try them so next tim eyou have an erge to try somthin like this just go do it. you will get a mutch better anwser than any ofe these
no as previously stated but ive actully thought about the same basic idea i actually thought of puting a leaf bower type of setup on my car and no im not joking i got a 91 ford taurus and id have just about enouf room for it but no time and no extra leaf blower
I would say no....And if it did it wouldnt be much at all...And if something snaps off and goes into the engine then you just bought yourself a new engine!
Wow...I have found the dumbest question of the day. I was starting to get worried because I leave to go home in an hour and havent found it for the day.
