im not considering it i got a puppy but my dad as wondering about it .... dose it cost money?? what do u need?? whats is there to do what do they check for and is it true they all got diseases and worms ??? or r they just like abandoned and homeless
Yes you can adopt at a local Humane Society or Animal Shelter, they make wonderful pets and you will be saving a life. IT usually costs between $60-$100, which includes most of the time: spaying/neutering, shots, de-worming if they are puppies and adults, and micro-chipping. Most of the time the facility de-worms and checks for any diseases you should have the option to take the animal to the vet within 7 days and have a physical preformed to check for things, if they find something that the shelter overlooked they will let you know and then you can take the finding results back to them and they give your money back if you want. Don't let this discourage you because any pet store is the same way and breeders (some not all) don't even give you that option. Most of the puppies/dogs they get are full blooded dogs that careless people don't want anymore for excuses as I'm moving or don't have time. They are also homeless or just plain out abandoned!!! Good luck and I hope you save a life!!!
Irresponsible horrible people are constantly getting rid of their dogs on places like craigs list. The dogs generally cost money and may or may not be healthy. They will ALWAYS be from bad breeding as good breeders require that the dogs come back to them.
State funded rescue agencies will have mainly healthy dogs from all walks of life. Some will be stray dogs, some will be owner releases, some will be confiscated dogs. It's generally policy for all dogs to receive vaccinations, a vet check, and a spay or neuter from these facilities. However, how hard they look for health problems is another issue. Dogs that are not adopted or are not adoptable will generally be killed - at the taxpayers expense.
Private no-kill rescue groups and breed rescue groups are generally owner releases and rescued dogs. Again, they come from all walks of life. They owner may have died, the owner may have developed an allergy, the owner may have been abusive, the owner may have been a bad person, etc. These dogs are generally fostered until a complete vet check and personality evaluation can be done and the screenings for potential adopters is pretty intense. I always say that if you can't get approved by one of these agencies, then you shouldn't own a dog.
If you go to your local animal shelter you can adopt them for a very nominal cost. They will have been spayed or neutered, and will have had shots. The cost usually depends on a number of things. I've adopted cats and never paid more than $30 or $40.

There are many different ways to adopt a dog.

They usually cost from $50-300
They all get checked and get up to date shots(in the cost fee)
Usually they ask for an application to see if this dog is right fro you.
