What do codes after a chord mean? e.g. Am (01220x)?

i got given these chords..

Ex.(eBGDAE)

Am (01220x)

C (01023x)

F (0123xx)

G (0345xx)

E (001220)

but whats with all the numbers and x's and stuff?? i dont understand.. explain please. Thanks!!

  • It looks like it's giving you fret numbers for each string with the x's meaning mute this string. The 0 means open string.

  • The numbers represent the fret that has to be pressed, and the letters (ebgdae) represent the strings. E Bing the 6th string e being the first string. For example, an 3 under the letter g would mean pressing down on the 3rd fret of the g string.

  • The numbers are which string and fret you play in/on. The 0's are open notes in which you don't have any fingers holding them down to play. They're just "open". The x's could mean two different things depending on the genre or song you're playing. The x's could mean a muted string or a dead note.

  • Those are the fingerings of the chord, the 0s represent strings that are sounded open (no finger contact), the Xs strings that are to be silent (either unpicked or muted) and the other numbers which fret position to finger the string.

    btw Your "F" is actually Fmaj7; and your "G" is a G6.

  • The numbers represent the fret where yer finger should go. The x usually means that you do not strum those strings & 0 = no finger; strum it open.
