  • First off, make sure the battery is charged up and working good. All an ignition coil does is amplify voltage and if the battery has a bad cell, the coil's voltage is going to be reduced as well.

Does your bike have 1 twin lead ignition coil or 2 single lead coils? Regardless of which, you want to remove the spark plugs, insert them into the caps and lay them on the engine. When you crank the engine over, both plugs should fire. If one does and the other doesn't or one doesn't have as big of a spark as the other, swap plugs and see what happens. If the same one still acts weak, then you've narrowed it down to either that particular ignition coil or that particular secondary winding of the twin lead coil. Now swap plug caps (most will unscrew off of the wire) and if the same plug or coil shows bad you know it's that coil. Be sure to check and make sure the plug wires are mounted solidly into the coil. Some have removable wires that could be loose while other coils have wires that cannot be removed. Also make sure juice isn't leaking through a plug wire where it's touches the engine or frame. To do that, be sure no wires are touching anything metal.

If the twin lead coil shows a bad side, then it's time for a new coil. If a single lead coil shows bad, replace that one only.

If one of the single coils shows no spark whatsoever, swap the two small wires going to each coil. If the opposite coil now fails to fire, then most likely it's the magnetic pickup coil (the things that replace old style points). Most are located somewhere at the end of the crankshaft. However, initially pickups often work ok when cold but fail when hot and later they fail completely.

Or, less likely, it could be the CDI box. To decide which, see if you can swap the leads on the magnetic pickups. If the opposite coil fails to fire, you know it's the pickup. If the same coil fails to fire, then it's the CDI box.
