how do you evaluate this problem?

  • -5 in in () so it is first, so we have -5.

    Exponentials come before multiplication (- sign counts as multiplication on -1) so we have

    (-5)^3 = -125

    then the - sign makes it

    --125 = 125

  • ok....

    the exponent gets distributed to what is inside the parentheses only. So, if you raise it to the 3rd power, the equation with the parenthesis expanded is the equivalent of:

    -(-5 * -5 * -5)

    -(25 * - 5) ==> the -5 * -5 because a 25 b/c ( - )( - ) = ( + )

    -(-125) ==> the 25 * -5 is a -125 b/c ( + )( - ) = ( - )

    125 ==> double negative is a positive

    So, the answer is 125.

  • in the order of operations you do things in parentheses, then multiply/divide from left to right, then add/subtract from left to right

    so with

    -(-5)^3

    first you do (-5)^3

    -5 x -5 x -5 = -125

    leaving you with

    -(-125) = 125

  • That's -(-125) or 125. Do the parentheses first.

  • The five is positive... so it's five to the third power. So 5X5X5 = 125

  • -(-5)^3

    -[(-5)(-5)(-5)]

    -(-125)

    125

  • 125
