Do you think Catholicism made us fear homosexuality?

I mean, Catholicism is the most popular religion and it doesn't allow people to be homosexual. Also, many century before J.-C., lesbians and gays were very much accepted. How that acceptation disappeared?

Update:

Sorry, people! My primary language is french, and I don't always have a dictionary with me!

  • no.

It doesn't matter how much we accept homosexuality - it's a sin.

it's wrong - God did not create two men, two women - he created a man & a woman.

it's like trying to justify lying, murder, adultery, stealing - all sins, all wrong.

  • Personally, no. If you are talking about the Classical Era, homosexuality was probably seen as debauchery and decadence.

Here's what makes me think this way - if we think of Easter as superseding the pagan celebration of the Spring Solstice, then the traditional symbols associated with this celebration - eggs, rabbits - predate Christianity in Europe. Those things are symbolic of new life and fertility - something all cultures have celebrated. Homosexuality, by contrast, would be symbolized by decay - old life withering away. Leaves falling off the trees, crumbling and turning into mulch.

Anyway, I am not sure of what the ancient did think of homosexuality, but it probably wouldn't have been a positive for the vast majority of people.

  • Catholicism "allows" people to be gay, but the official dogma is that "it would be immoral to ACT on it" And before J.C. homosexuality wasn't accepted across the board. In particular its parent religion, Judaism, forbade its practice.

@Blockhead: Catholicism is a real word (and a very common one; I'm suprised you never heard it), but you're quite right about "acceptation" not being a real word...

  • Probably this and other religions. I also think things that are different from the norm makes people dislike. Not too many people are fond of change.

  • It's all religion, not just catholicism. Thankfully the American gov doesn't put u to death for it.

  • you need big time work on your spelling and pronunciation of words,i think you just made up 2 words in that question. (catholicism, acceptation are not words) OK --I STAND CORRECTED! LOL

  • No. I'm not Catholic, and I know that gayness is an abomination.
