Upgrade D90 to D810?

I've been wanting to upgrade to FX for quite a while now.. All of my lenses except for one (Sigma 70-300) are old lenses for 35mm film. I am also very intrigued by the video quality. I take photos as a hobby, and shoot landscape and a lot of graffiti and murals because I live in the city. I enjoy going out once in a while to the country and getting some wildlife. Will the camera be much heavier?? I want to shoot very wide and want to make the best of my lenses including a 28-70 which I love! Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays.

  • Your DX lenses will produce significantly sharper results on a DX camera vs using an FX body of similar resolution. I'd go with the D810 over the D90 any day if I was shooting with FX lenses and doing landscapes. I actually went with a Pentax 645D instead of the D800 and I'm so glad I did. The 645D is currently about $6,400 (about $4,000 used) but when you start adding up the cost of used lenses vs new Nikkor, the price is actually lower with the Pentax at 40MP. If landscapes, still life, macro, and portraiture is what you do, the Pentax 645D is better than anything out of Nikon or Canon. It absolutely sucks at focus tracking though.

You should also keep in mind that when you apply the crop factor (1.5x) to get the equivalent focal length in FF, you must also multiply the aperture too. Doing so will show you want f/stop you'd be using on a FF camera to achieve the same depth of field. So a 28-70 f/2.8 on a DX body produces the DOF had you used a 42-105 at f/4 on an FX body.

  • 28mm will be much wider with the D810 and you surely will love your 28-70mm more! As for the weight, I don't think there would be much of a difference but to be sure, you can easily find out their exact weights using the Search box at the top of this page.

  • It does weigh about 1/2 pound more. Noticeable, but not a deal breaker in my mind. The suggest D750 does only weigh .1 pound more, is newer, does get great reviews, and is certainly less expensive. Here are the three specs compared.

If you are a Nikonian, Mike Hagen did an excellent review of the D750.

  • If you're concerned about the weight, have a look at the D750, you'll find some decent reviews and comparisons on You Tube.
