2/5 + 1/4 = x -1/2 Algebra?

I have no clue how to do this or the next 24 of this type of question to solve for x

2/5 + 1/4 = x -1/2

  • Find the common denominator for all:

    8/20 + 5/20 = x -10/20

    add 10/20 to both sides to get x by itself on one side of the equal symbol.

    8/20 + 5/20 + 10/20 = x

    23/20 = x

    then simplify : 1 3/20 = x

  • x = 2/5 + 1/4 + 1/2 = (8+5+10)/20 = 23/20

  • Hi there,

    There are two way to solve this equation.

    Way1: (Using fraction)

    2/5 + 1/4 = x -1/2

    x -1/2 = 2/5 + 1/4

    x = 10/20+ 8/20 + 5/20 ()

    x= 23/20

    Way2: (Using decimal)

    2/5 + 1/4 = x -1/2

    .4 + .25 = x - .5

    .65= x - .5

    x= 1.15

    Therefore, x= 23/20 or 1.15

    (^_^)

  • You can solve it by making x the subject of formula...i.e. by isolating the variable you want to know( in this case it is x) and sending the rest on the other sideof the equation. So, by sending -1/2 on the other side of the equation, it becomes +1/2. Anything you hae to do then is to add the fractions. See below,

    2/5 + 1/4=x - 1/2

    isolating x, i.e. making x subject of formula,

    2/5 + 1/4 + 1/2=x

    Therefore,

    23/20=x

    x= 23/20 = 1.15

  • ha, this is sooo easy, ok so first, add 2/5 and 1/4 but they have different denominators so multiply 2/5 by 4 and 1/4 by 5 and get

    8/20 +5/20 which is 13/20

    so the equation is now 13/20 =x-1/2

    then u have to move the -1/2 over to the other side of the equal sign and to do that u have to cancel it out so u ADD 1/2

    so now the equation is 23/20=x

    so the answer is 23/20 =x

    or 1and 3/20=x

    You need a common denominator. What number is a multiple of 2, 4, AND 5? It's 20 since:

    multiples of 2=2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20,...

    multiples of 4=4,8,12,16,20,...

    multiples of 5=5,10,15,20,...

    20 is a common denominator since it appears in ALL THREE lists. Now, 2/5=8/20, 1/4=5/20, and 1/2=10/20. The problem is:

    (8/20)+(5/20)=x-(10/20)

    13/20=x-(10/20)

    Add 10/20 to both sides:

    x=23/20 or 1 3/20

  • 2/5 + 1/4 = x - 1/2

    x = 2/5 + 1/4 + 1/2

    x = (2 x 4)/(5 x 4) + (1 x 5)/(4 x 5) + (1 x 10)/(2 x 10)

    x = 8/20 + 5/20 + 10/20

    x = 23/20 (1.15)

  • Friend. Do you know how to find common denominators to add and subtract fractions? That's all you do for these kinds of problems.

    2/5 = 8/20

    1/4 = 5/20

    1/2 = 10/20

    13/20 = x - 10/20

    x = 23/20

  • As written , questioin must be read as :-

    2/5 + 1/4 = x - (1/2)

    8 + 5 = 20x - 10

    23 = 20x

    x = 23/20
