From the State Dept's site: "Since March 1, 2010, all U.S. citizens – including children – have been required to present a valid passport or passport card for travel beyond the “border zone” into the interior of Mexico. The “border zone” is generally defined as an area within 20 to 30 kilometers of the border with the U.S., depending on the location. Regardless of the destination in Mexico, however, all U.S. citizens age 16 or older must present a valid U.S. passport or passport card to re-enter the U.S., even by land."
A passport will take 4-6 weeks to process. If you pay for an expedited passport, it'll arrive in 2-3 weeks.
YES YOU NEED A PASSPORT.. is there some reason you can't READ and UNDERSTAND the RULES regarding foreign travel on the IMMIGRATION WEB SITE.
You have needed a PASSPORT to go to and from Mexico for at least 2 YEARS NOW so this is not something brand new.. it's been around long enough for you to KNOW about it and GET A PASSPORT....because AmeriKans can no longer go to a foreign country with an OLD WATER BILL for proof of citizenship.
Yes, you need travel documents. Flying by airplane? The a passport is it. Going by car? Then you could also choose a passport card issued by the state department or an enhanced driver's license offered by some states.
Need one in a hurry? Those are possible too - expedited for one fee (still by mail after the intial submission of paperwork) and in person by appointment - but you have to be close enough to one of the regional passport centers to go in person.
If you prepare your application and submit it at the post office on Monday...and pay the fees to have it expedited and the express mail fees. it will take 3 weeks to get it. If you need to travel before that, you have 2 options. first, if you live in or near a Regional Passport Agency, you can call for an appointment, go , wait, and get your passport the same day. usually takes a few days to get an appointment. See 2nd site below. If you need to travel in a few days and cannot go to a Regional Passport Agency, you can use one of the private companies that will get it for you for an extra fee, in just a few days. See 3rd site.
Yes you need a passport and should apply for one as soon as possible because it can take a couple of weeks for it to come through, unless you pay extra for "fast track".
