How do I control what programs run at system start-up.?

I have windows xp and it will start faster without unneeded programs.

  • Windows comes with two accessories designed for monitoring and configuring the startup programs and services. One is the System Configuration Utility and the other is the Services Console. The Registry Editor can also be used to control startup but is a last resort.

    System Configuration Utility

This system tool is often called "msconfig" and is present in XP (but also in Windows 98/Me/ not 2000). From the start bar click on start, run type

    msconfg

and click on ok. You will want the Statup or Services Tab. Tick what you would like to start or untick the ones you want to disable (you can always enable it again if you find you have disabled the wrong program)

    Services Console

In addition to program executables, other processes known as "services' can be running in the background. Window XP comes with a module known as the Services Console (services.msc) for configuring services as well as programs. To see the services that are on your computer go to Start|Run and enter

    services.msc

(As is characteristic of Windows, this is only one of several ways.) This will open what is called the services console. When a services is highlighted you can double click it and use the drop down box to disable a service or sit it to manual or automatic. On manual the service will only start if you (or another service or program) manually starts it, automatic will start on startup and disabled will never run until you set it back to manual or automatic.

    Registry Editor

What starts up can also be controlled by editing the Registry. This is a last resort for stubborn cases and is only for experienced PC users. If you dont know how to use regedit you will most likely be better off avoiding it - you can potentially destroy windows messing direct with the registry.

    Third Party Tools

There are also lots of free and shareware 3rd party programs to do the same job - usually msconfig and the services applet should handle most of your needs, but some of the third party tools are easier to use particularly for non experienced users. e.g

    http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

is a good free tool to change the registry safely for startup programs, although there are better (easier) ones for newbies though (mainly commercial ones).

    Hope this helps.

  • 1. some programs are just in the start up folder. START>ALL PROGRAMS>START UP

    2. You can type MSCONFIG in RUN in in START UP tab access to more of them. but you must be careful there. After restart a message will appear. Check the check-box & press OK.

    3. You can Use Programs like START UP FASTER, START UP GUARD, ... . This is the best way.

  • start-run. a dialogue box will come up. type msconfig. it will bring you to the start up menu. put a mark in the selective start up. click the start up tab on the top. take the checks out of the boxes that you don't need at start up. *do not disable your anti virus program or any of it's components*. you require a restart. a dialogue box will appear when restarted telling you that changes have been made put a check in the box that say don't show.

before you do it do google searches on anything you don't recognize and find out what they are before you turn them off.

    best of luck

  • 1) Go to Start -> Programs -> Startup and see what's in there. Delete any item in that menu that you don't want to come up on startup.

    2) Go to Start -> Run and type msconfig. Go to the "Services" and "Startup" tabs and uncheck anything you don't want to run at startup.

  • go t start->run-> and type msconfig. you will get a box with some options at the top. choose startup. there u will see all the programs that begin on startup. check/uncheck the ones you want press apply-ok-restart the pc.

  • hit start hit run type in msconfig go to start up and unclick what ya dont want to start. i dont have any on mine starts so much faster!!

  • msconfig

    click start

    run

    msconfig

    click the startup tab
