army reserves, guard reserves, navy reserves?

I just graduated with my masters in accounting. I am starting as an auditor for department of defense in a few weeks. I am thinking of joining the reserves. I am thinking of joining as an officer doing either accounting work or IT work. Will I be able to do IT work in the military if my education is not in IT but I have experience? Also how likely is it that I would be able to get a finance position in the reserves? If I am deployed do I get paid by the military and my current position?

  • No such thing as guard reserves. There is the Army, Army Reserves and their similar counterpart - the National Guard. There is the Air Force, Air Force Reserves and their similar counterpart - the Air National Guard. The Navy & Marine Reserves do not have Guard counterparts.

The Guard are state agencies and the Reserves are federal agencies.

Unless you can get a direct commission, you will have to be away from your new job for a lot of training. The Guard does have a weekend warrior course that takes up to 18 months to complete. Schools for your specific career field ac be anywhere from 11 to 41 weeks long.

For more information on the Guard go to:

I'm sure there are similar sites for the Army, Air Force, Navy & Marine Reserves that will give you the information for them.

    Good Luck.

  • Contact a recruiter for the different branches of the service and ask him/her to direct you to whoever you must talk to to get straight answers as to what your options are. I would not consider becoming anything other than an officer, if I had a masters degree. The difference between enlisted and being an officer is the difference between hamburger and steak. Know matter what your loyalties are to the military and or your country, at some point you will retire (if you stay that long) and the retirement will be far superior as an officer. I, personally would look towards the reserves to gain the two retirements. It would seem that if you are IT qualified (they should be able to test for that) they would place you in that MOS. Good luck.

  • Contact a recruiter for the exclusive branches of the service and ask him/her to direct you to whoever you ought to speak to to get straight solutions as to what your choices are. I would now not take into account fitting some thing other than an officer, if I had a masters degree. The change between enlisted and being an officer is the change between hamburger and steak. Comprehend subject what your loyalties are to the navy and or your nation, at some point you will retire (if you keep that long) and the retirement will probably be some distance superior as an officer. I, for my part would look toward the reserves to reap the 2 retirements. It might seem that if you're IT qualified (they must be ready to experiment for that) they might place you in that MOS. Good good fortune.

  • The Army could care less what your degree is in to become an Officer. The only Officer career fields in the Army where it matters are Medical Officers, Lawyers, Clergy and Finance.

Most of the Finance Officers in the Army are in the Reserve and Guard.

Also keep in mind that the Reserve and Guard operates 24/7 just like the military and the majority of the finance work is handled by full-time Fiance Officers and Technicians so I am not sure what you are expecting to get out of being a Fiance Officer part time.

My advice? Become an Officer in something YOU have always wanted to do...like Artillery...or Aviation...something that excites you...

I know a county judge who serves in the Guard enlisted as a Tanker...because he likes doing something other than law for his part time job and he like actually operating the tanks (rather than being an Officer in charge of them)

  • Whatever branch you choose to go into......go ACTIVE Duty.......don't be a weekend warrior....
