Is this a reasonable upgrade for a desktop?
My desktop has had it. 5.5 years old. Got a virus, screwed up my registry & its massively unstable & freezes up regularly. And every time it does, It loses every single sign-in I had entered. A real pain. Virus has been removed but the damage remains. Its windows vista I think.
My old one is Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600 with 3GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz & 250GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) .
My proposed new one is about $350+ tax for a scratch & dent model. Free shipping & free returns. 6% tax verus 10% if I buy locally in a store.
Processor: Intel Core i5-3330 Processor (4 cores / 4 threads, 3.00 GHz,6MB Cache)
Operating system: Windows 8 Standard 64 - English
Display: None - Desktop
Graphics: Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator HD
Memory: 8GB (2 X 4GB) PC3-12800 DDR3 1600MHz SDRAM UDIMM Memory
Hard Drive: 1TB, 7200RPM Serial ATA 2.5" Hard Drive
Optical Drive: DVD Recordable Serial ATA
Im not into gaming at all. Don't do much video on the desktop. Mostly keep multiple windows open at once and go back & forth between pages. And I keep an Active Trader program running during market hours.
When my current computer was new, I could keep 10 windows & active trader going at one time with no problem. Now I might freeze up with 3-4 windows and no active trader.
My objective is for my new one to last me 5-6 years without any upgrades. While also spending as little as possible.
I plan on keeping my 23 inch monitor from my old system.
Thanks
Update:a quick check at walmart shows $559 is their lowest price for identical stats. That's a new HP.
They don't have any refurbs with comparable price/stats. For example, the best processor they have in refurbs is a core 2 duo. And less memory & smaller hard drive.
Update 3:looks like Im going with a slightly cheaper one....
Gateway Intel Core i3 6GB DDR3 1TB HDD Capacity Desktop PC Windows 8 64-bit DX4860-UR308
This one is $330 off amazon, no tax & I have discounted amazon giftcards that are not spendable at the other place.
So....the first version would have cost me $361, this version will cost me $271. 25% cheaper.
(Because I have accumulated discounted Amazon giftcards, I have such an amount that if I dont use them for my desktop, I might not otherwise use them within 5 years.)
You cant regularly buy discounted Amazon giftcards but I loaded up with some 15% off cards a few yeas ago and more recently came across a "steal" on $200 worth for $150.
In all, I have too much in Amazon gift cards and not buying this desktop off Amazon would require "new" non-discounted money.

Buy new or rebuilt and stay away from windows 8 it's a dog.
Buy a H.P. or Dell refurbished from Walmart.com
be careful with refurbished machines it usually means it had problems in the past with something
that being said i always replace the power supply
get a cheap i500w coolermaster of newegg as usually the put in a junk psu
Yes, I would suggest that you upgrade your desktop.
Windows Vista is known for its security issues.
Upgrading your computer would let you do more task much faster.
