Three-pipe problem, part 2?

Two days ago I had "quite the three-pipe problem" in my genealogy research and posted this question:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aqyzc...

Briefly, I wondered if John and Abraham Shetter could have been adopted, based on what appeared to be a different last name in their 1860 census entry, when they were 2 and 1.

Two of my esteemed colleagues thought the last name looked like "Henry", although it looked like "Sc**ly" to me.

So, I copied and pasted a number of names starting with "H" from there and have posted the composite here:

http://www.tedpack.org/0_henry.jpg

All are from 1860, Guilford, Franklin, Pennsylvania, Roll M653_1111.

All are by Geo W Welsh, Assistant Marshall

I just copied one or two lines. The people and where they were, from the top down, are:

John and Abraham Shetter, Sc**ly or Henry: Page 399 Image 406.

Henry and Hiram, age 16 & 14: Page 344, Image 349.

Henry Miller: Page 397, Image 404.

Henry Byers: Page 398, Image 405.

Hannah and Hiram, age 12 & 11: Page: 398, Image: 405.

What do you all think? Are John and Abraham really Henrys?

Update:

-------------------------------

The 1870 didn't ask relationship to H of H. John and Abraham are listed as Shetters and living with Rudolph and Mary in 1870.

It is Guilford, Franklin, Pennsylvania; Roll: M593_1345; Page: 233B; Image: 349

if you want to look. Rudoph didn't move around much.

Update 3:

----------

Something else I forgot - All I need is an opinion on the name in 1860, and, if you can find it, a marriage record for Rudolph Shetter to Mary Bender. I have a lot more citations than I can paste here; if you, for instance, look up Abraham in the Woodside Cemetery association or Rudolph on find-a-grave, you'll just be duplicating my efforts.

  • Hi, Ted -

In looking again at the image of the census record for Rudolph Shelter/Shetter and family in Guilford Twnshp., Franklin Co., Penn., I note that the census taker, Geo. W. Welsh, initially wrote young John and Abram as Dwelling 949 (same as Rudolph, wife, and children), but Family 952, indicating that the 2 boys were not the children of Rudolph and Mary - just adding to the mystery about them. Geo. W. then crossed out those numbers because it must have been made clear to them that they were part of the Shetter family. (Thanks, Geo. W. for muddying the waters.)

I did look at the other Henry handwriting images you compiled for Geo. W. Welsh. You didn't include any "H" starting names with his "Hs" that looked more like "Ss," like Hege/Hego, Family 949 above the Shetter family entry. Anyway, his script varied widely. I suppose it depended upon how much of a case of writer's cramp he had and how he had to balance the census ledger to write with pen and ink well. The "ys" in the names had loops and just straight downward strokes, for example.

I looked at the HeritageQuest census transcriptions for the Rudolph and Mary Shelter/Shetter household too. That transcriber didn't even try to guess at the last name for young John and left it blank. I don't find any transcription and link to the census ledger image for young Abram in HeritageQuest. (Big help those folks were!)

I also checked Fold3 1860 census records. That transcriber wrote Shetler for the surname of the Rudolph and Mary family! Plus, the Fold3 transcriber wrote "Henry" for young John's surname and for young Abram.

You know my thought on the last name for the 2 boys. :-)

This is _definitely_ a 3-pipe problem!

I hope you can get hold of the church record book (vol. 4) that I found existed and that it contains the info you need, or that the Salem Lutheran Church I located in what is now Marion, Franklin Co., Penn. has the info you need.

By the way, whenever you do find definitive baptismal info for the 2 boys, I'd love to know what you found.

  • Are John and Abraham listed as sons of Rudolph Shetter in 1870? Am I in the right ballpark? Maybe Schar***.

Name: Rudolph Shelter Age in 1860: 24 Birth Year: abt 1836 Birthplace: Pennsylvania Home in 1860: Guilford, Franklin, Pennsylvania Gender: Male Post Office: Marion Value of real estate: View image Household Members:

    Name Age

    Rudolph Shelter 24

    Mary Shelter 31

    Anna Shelter 5

    Charles Shelter 4

    Jacob Shelter 4

    John Shelter 2

    Abram Shelter 1

    Cathne Smith 18

I put in a correction for the name to ancestry.com.

Who would they have adopted the boys from? The ages fit in after the twins were born.

In the 1880 census, Mary is listed as having heart disease. No wonder since she has so many children. Living next door is John Bender and family. Brother maybe?

In the 1850, there is a Mary Bender, 21, living a farm or two away from a Henry family. Is that the right Mary?

  • Something else to consider... the 5 year old and the 4 year old twins could be Rudolph's from a previous marriage and Abram and John (2 and 1) could be Mary's from a previous marriage to a man surname Henry. So look for a marriage record in 1869 or 1870 and look for the last name Bender or Henry married to a Rudolph Shetter/Shetters.( I always look for a last name that ends with an "s" without the "s" too).
