Is a single player "MMO" type game even a viable game concept?

Update:

What I mean is take a game like WoW keep all of its content and make it a single player computer game. Of course pvp would take a hit, and some changes would have to be made. But all im wonder is would it be possible with a big game companies technology and budget, would it even be viable?

  • Yes and it's already been done with a few games, like with the Phantasy Star Online games originally being MMOs with single player content and Xenoblade Chronicles being pretty much an MMORPG without any online capabilities

  • Not sure if this is what you're asking about but there is a cult classic JRPG series called .hack// (pronounced dot hack) that has it's plot take place in a fictional MMORPG. There's other 'players' you can talk, trade with, and learn some backstory about, PvPers you can happen upon, varying guilds and guildmembers you can meet and shop with etc. There's even forums in the game that talk about the various events and rumors.

It's interesting but in the end it's just a unique setting and plot to a JRPG.

There's 7 games in the series available in the US all of them on the PS2. It's split into two sagas this is the opening from the 5th game, the first in the second saga.

  • Yes. Greatly. Minecraft is slowly merging into that concept, in terms of single player, not multiplayer servers. I'm talking about leveling up certain skills that will help you achieve stuff.

  • Wouldn't that be a bit like Skryim?
