My dog has diarrhea...?

A new puppy I got today about 12:30.....and he didn't get to eat till about 4....He just used the bathroom about 6 and he had diarrhea, he didn't pee either..But he seems perfectly fine, he was running and jumping and playing with his toys before and after he pooped....

  • It's possible that his little tummy is upset because of the big change that's happened today (coming to a new home) and he's a excited and anxious.

It could also be that you fed him something different to what the breeder was feeding him. Any changes in the diet of your dog are best done slowly and progressively. Sudden changes are another causative factor of loose motions.

I wouldn't be overly stressed about it. I'd wait til tomorrow and if his stools haven't started to form a bit better then I'd consider a quick trip to the vet for a check up, but I'm pretty confident that he'll be fine by tomorrow.

Congratulations on your new friend and I hope you have many happy years together.

  • There can be so many reasons why at this point. One, he could be nervous of his new surroundings, it could be his food and water (is it different from where you got the pup from?) Has he had some shots yet? Has he been around strange dogs, or parks? You have to be watchful of Parvo. If he has diarrhea and vomiting, get him to a vet ASAP!!

Keep an eye on him, if he get worse then take him to a vet regardless of how much he plays and acts. Make sure he gets to eat 4 times a day, and feed him a quality food. I always recommend Wellness you can get it in pet stores. It is human grade quality food and is excellent. If your dog food contains Meat, Meat Meal, or any kind of By-products your food is poison and contains "rendered" meat. Please look it up on the net. It means it contains the 4 D's, Dead, Dying, Decayed, and Diseased animal meats, which contains euthanized cats and dogs from vet clinics and shelters..it goes on, but do look up rendered meats before you choose a dog food.

Also if the pup is under 6 weeks old he is toooooo young to be away from the mother, even 7 weeks is too young, so that might also be a consideration.

  • At this point, I wouldn't really worry too much. It's probably because he is in a new place with a new family and doesn't really know what is going on. Just keep a close eye on him for the next couple of days. If it doesn't seem to be getting better you may need to take him to the vet. Congratulations on the puppy and best of luck!

  • could be stress from the change and move.when i got my puppy the drive was about 2.5hours and she had diarrhea also.i thought it was parvo because she started throwing up also.so i took her to the vet and they gave me good news she didn't have parvo, but due to her still on wet food when i got her(7.5weeks) and gave her some wet food and was not the same kind as what the breeder was feeding her.but i would wait it out if it don't get better tomorrow i would take it to the vet.i also would call the breeder and ask them have he/she been de-worm?how long ago?and how much was given?my breeder(wouldn't call him that)gave my pup de-wormer for a 4lb pup and she was only 2.5 when i got her.but she is 4months and fine and got all her shots and heathy.enjoy you new friend

  • As long as he is drinking and doesn't become dehydrated he should be ok. Stress of changing homes or travelling can cause diarrhea in some pups. Give him a tablespoon or so of canned 100% pumpkin puree (not the pie filling) that should help. Make sure he gets all his puppy shots and dewormed as well. Have fun with your pup!

  • I would think that your dog may have a little too much stress because he has come to a new home.Do not worry because he will adapt to his new home and soon the stress will flee.Since he is a puppy, he will get small nick knacks here and there but I wouldn't worry! He my also have a bug in his stomach. If that may be the case, I would see a vet.

    I hope this helps!!!Thanx!!!

  • It's probably due to stress and moving to a different environment, however if it persists or gets worse I would get in to the vets with a stool sample. Worms can cause this and so can parvo, so don't wait too long.

  • he's probably stressed. and if you fed him canned dog food that sometimes causes it
