well i was having an argument with one of my friends weather if english was a language or dialect..im not gonna say which side i was on but i just wanna know.
A dialect just means a certain type of any language.
English is the language. American English is a dialect of English. There are even dialects of American English, like Southern American or African-American English.
This can all come up to debate though in some cases. Chinese, for example, is considered one language, even though speakers of the Mandarin 'dialect' can't understand the Cantonese 'dialect,' so they should technically be classified as two different languages. Generally, if one speaker can't understand the other, they're different languages instead of just dialects.
English is a language with different dialects. America, Canada, The UK, and Australia all speak english, but the wording or words the use are different. Like in America we say 'pants', but the UK calls it trousers.
yes and no. a dialect is a local version of a spoken language so in one part of UK say essex we have same language as in another, say Cornwall but each has slight variations or pronunciation differences .some are very subtle. so while english can be regarded as a widely spoken language it can also have dialects within different regions.
