do my tetras need air pump?

i have a tank with 2 neon tetras and 2 red faced tetras (all schooling) and 1 betta. with bettas i know you dont need a pump as they breathe from surface, but do tetras need a pump? when i have my pump on it just seems like theyre all stressed, espiecally the betta.

  • as long as there is adequate surface agitation, no need of an air pump

  • Probably not if your filter is strong enough.

Air pumps/air stones, do not directly put air in the Tank.

they cause surface disturbance that increases the oxygen exchange.

which puts "air" in the tank.

You betta can breath with its labyrinth, yes, but also gets air the old fashion way.

If your filter causes a lot of surface ripples you should be good.

    best of luck!

  • firstly you will need to tell your tank size to be sure... but of course they NEED one. air pump are really important. unless you can use your fingers and move the water suface the whole day.
