DOES ANYBODY HAVE A NANO RIO PROTEIN SKIMMER?

DO THEY WORK GOOD? CAN YOU USE PHOSPHATE MEDIA IN IT?

  • They are decent little skimmers that work ok for smaller tanks below 20 gallons. They are nice and cheap as far as skimmers go. They are more of a hybrid between a hang on back filter and a skimmer since they do have a media chamber. They do not make phosphate media for it, yet, but have a carbon cartridge. You could probably retrofit some phosphate media where the carbon media would go, if you so desired.

  • I'm not sure about the performance, I know that Rio makes pumps that are sometims used for skimmers, but I've never heard of the company releasing a skimmer of their own design.

However, you can't use phosphate-removing media in any skimmer. That's what fluidized bed filters are for. In a pinch, you can use any filter that includes media trays; just remove the biomedia and find a way to run the water through the phosphate media (that's what I do when I run carbon: an old powerfilter with snap-together media cartridges).
