  • It is extremely safe. When I was on it my boyfriend and I never used a condom (we're both clean, don't worry lol). My first shot was in November and I decided to stop using it last month and go on the pill. The only reason I got off of the shot is because I don't like not knowing when my period would appear. I also didn't like the slight risk of infertility and not knowing when my period would come back. I didn't like the shot because I felt sick a lot and after my first shot, I had my period for a month. Then it went away for a month, then came back for two weeks till I got off and switched to the pill. I'm almost done my first month on the pill and I'm very happy I switched :) Everybody is different though and have different reactions and experiences with it.

  • I had the depo shot and I heard the same thing about weight gain, however, I did not gain weight, my bones started to ache because it drained all the calcium from my body. I had to go to the doctor an they gave me estrogen pills, but i should not had to have that. Not only that my bones hurt so bad that i had to use warm towels to lay over my body to make me feel better, my hair started to thin out as well and less sex drive. This was in a five to six year time frame as well. I did tell my doctor that it was to much for me and got back on the pill, and was on it forever, and i knew the pill would work for me because i was responsible. But some people do gain weight from the depo. So i don't know what will happen to you, but if you feel that remembering to take the pill is to much then try it out, then you wouldn't have to worry about remembering to take the pill everyday, but if you are responsible you should not have to worry about a thing.

I never got pregnant on the pill or depo

She is right about the periods, that stoped with me as well. I didn't have a period for five to six years that why the doctor put me on estrogen pills.

  • i had the Depo injections several years ago now. I think i had about 4 or 5 altogether. I didnt gain weight with them, but then i find i dont really gain weight with any type of birth control i use. We are all different so you might, but you might not. A side effect i experienced was my periods stopped altogether, which at the time i thought was great!! But after the 2nd or 3rd injection i started to feel really lousy. Its hard to explain but my libido vanished completely to the point where i could have easily not had sex ever again (much to my husband's sheer horror!! lol) i just didn't feel womanly, felt just like 'nothingness' So hard to explain, but when i discussed birth control with my GP last week and i mentioned not wanting the injection because it really did not agree with me, he nodded his head and said yes, it has been known to make women feel really crappy.

You might be lucky but you will only find out if you have one, you can always go back to the pill if you are not happy.

    Best of luck!

...in answer to your other question, yes it is safe - as long as you get your next one within the time frame suggested (used to be every 3 months)

Another alterntive is the implant. Inserted in your arm and is effective for 3 years. I had no problems with my first one, but my second one is giving me problems - pot luck i guess?? Might be worth discussing with your gp.
