Friends who turn into acquaintances?

Isn't it sad when people who were once your good friends become your acquiantances. I was close to so many people in the past (for months or even years) and somehow we just drifted apart; none of us called each other and now we are more like acquaintances and can't even talk and share stories like before, but just a friendly, hi, how are you...".

  • Yes, it is sad sometimes. I had a freind that I was so close to in 4-6th grade. We saw each other everyday even in the summer and weekends. We told each other everything and always worked on projects and schoolwork together. I thought that for sure, we would never drift apart, no matter what. We were gonna be best friends for life. But then as Junior High came on, we only had one class together. We ate lunch in separate tables because we weren't in the same pod (our junior high divided 7th and 8th grade into three pods, or teams that had to eat lunch together). She started making new friends, and so did I. By 8th grade, all we really had in common was our English class. And even there, we didn't talk much. Just smiled occasionaly or ask each other questions about "How are your pets?" or "Do you understand number 7?" We became more like acquaintances. It's not that we are not friends anymore. It's just that we don't really have as much in common as we used to. And now we don't see each other much. Just passing by in the halls. We're still friends. But it's not the same, you know. It makes me sad to think about it sometimes, but I know that it happens to everyone. =/

  • I totally understand what you are saying. I wish their was a better word for the relationship we refer to as friends. I have chosen the expression "kindred spirits" and these people about 6 of them are very special. We gather at a special restaurant twice a year for birthdays~~the feelings run deep and the tradition of our gatherings insure the bonds that we have developed. Our feelings for each other are not casual. One of these people is the very best of the very best~~he and I have known each other since were 18 months old. Acquaintances are no longer in my life or circumstance.

  • Hi Lulu,

You are right. You are talking about months, but trust me, it happens even with the best of buddies from school, say a few years back. It is lovely at the beginning to meet them, you love to meet, you hug, you celebrate your meeting....but later...you feel....where are the freinds / buddies you knew once ??? they seem so different. In your case it is good freinds, but in my case it was old school freinds..and they are soooooooooooooo different that...I cannot explain. One of my old crushes, actually sounded like....so different i cannot explain or describe why it hurt me. We live in the past sometimes, but when we have to deal with the future, they change...they have different personalities.....

You drift from ple you love but accept it. You will hate them for it, but.;.....that will only make u lose them...yes....i can feel the way u feel and hurts like crazy sometimes...dont lose hope...move on. Dont die over them or give them too much importance that you get hurt again...leave ..and shut them out of their life okay ??? thats what i did. trus t me it helps..or u wud look desperate in front of your lousy "not-so-good-freinds''' freinds......

    take care...

  • Yes it's sad. I think people's circumstances that change. If you were in the same situation you'd probably still be friends. I've notice this happens with co-workers.

  • Yep I have that now. Today even. Sat at the pub with all my ex-schoolies half the table to spoke to themselves and so did the other. Upset me tbh.

  • Yes I understand. I call them associates. They probably were`nt even friends in the first place.

  • it's really sad,

i have the same issues with a view of my old friends.

it just tears me up, cause i miss our friendship.

  • yep, it is sad but true friends last a lifetime
