Bill Gates has a pretty huge ego. But he deserves it because he's earned it, and I doubt he has many insecurities in his life.
Professional athletes have also earned the right to a big ego, but they tend to over-inflate even past that sometimes. I think that is less about covering up an insecurity problem and more about them losing touch with reality and truly beginning to believe the hype about themselves, and convincing themselves that they really are somehow better than the rest of us.
And then you have the typical highschool bully with a ego a mile wide and who has insecurity twice as wide as that.
In short, I believe insecurity can give rise to a false bravado that is seen as ego, and ego can be whipped into a frenzy by a disconnect with reality, and an ego can be earned.
I'm not a professional but i completely disagree with the theory that big egos equal big insecurities. Big egos is , in my eyes, a very bad quality. Some are just born with it. You can see it in boys/girls since childhood. Some because of success have big egos. Someone insecure cannot have a big ego because they are simply not confident. They are insecure. It's a contradiction.
I believe that is what having a big ego is about. There again, it can also be a case of self confidence. People do not like people boasting about what they have got, big car big yacht big manhood etc. People do make up stories to bolster their lifestyle to make themselves appear more confident and more interesting than what they percieve themselves as being.

People seem to try and make up for their insecurities by seeking affirmation from others - for example, girls who feel very insecure tend to wear lots of makeup and extra-sexy outfits. People who have something to feel bad about have to try really hard to convince the world that they are confident.
Absolutely. Usually when people come across as egotistic it is because they want people to compliment them. Rarely do people really think they are perfect.

If an ego is to large I do believe the person is trying to cover up some major insecurities.
