As a black guy......?

How come people think I can only be on welfare, a drug dealer, a sports player, etc?

I work at Wal-Mart as a cashier, and people look at me funny, even black people. Almost like I'm not suppose to have that job.

I once got an interview to be a custodian and the guy told me usually Spanish people do these jobs.

Why are certain jobs only for certain races?

  • People love to stereotype, and wrongly believe that the majority of black people only do these things. I expected certain white people to believe this but it is a shame that black people find the fact that you have a job so surprising. PRIDE people, you don't have to resign yourselves to handouts or crime you can be someone, you have a contribution to make to society.

  • You can be ANY race to do ANY job. But in today's society, with almost everyone ripping on people for certain things, we look at it that way.

For instance, a lot of African Americans play something like football or basketball. Over the years since the 70's this started. So, today, we think of African Americans as sport players and what not.

Mexicans. We lower them in society. Why? Who knows. Probably because the country is poor. So we look at them as doing low wage jobs.

College degrees also are important. If you have something like a Bachelors Degree in a certain subject, or even an Associates, and are applying for jobs like a Wal-Mart cashier and etc., people look at you thinking you should try and get a job in what you mastered.

    Society. The ever-changing life.

  • That sucks , I hate racism.

If they look at you funny you should just ignore it or just smile at them , maybe they're just having a bad day. They will most likely smile back.

I don't think that there are certain jobs for certain races.

Just expectations of where people would 'expect' you to work , because they're used to seeing a certain race of people work certain jobs.

Prove them wrong , work where YOU want to work and don't let ANYONE judge you on your race.

If they don't like it then eff them. If the job means a lot to you , you shouldn't let it bother you.

Good luck with your job. =)

  • They are for everyone. people are just being racist towards you and don't mind what they may say about you.

The reason people think you are a drug dealer, gangster, sports player etc. is because most media

presents black people as that and it has become a trend.

Just be yourself and ignore other people.

  • thats called a stereotype... and it wouldve been hispanic, i don't see many spanish people working as custodians.. who cares what other people think. do what works for you. most people would rather stare at mindless tv than do something productive
