Panic Attacks Or Asthma?
Hi, I suffer from panic attacks but I also have asthma and I was wondering how I can tell the difference between the two? For most nights lately i've felt like my breathing has been bad, but I get light headed, my mouth gets really dry and my heart starts racing. It seems to get worse when i'm on my own and it seems to get better if I do something to take my mind off it (which is extremely difficult). Any ideas?

Panic attack causes hyperventilation which is rapid and deep breathing. How to distinguish it from asthma?
Sometimes it can be difficult to tell the difference, though a person with a hyperventilation syndrome shouldn't have wheezes on physical examination. An asthma attack may or may not have wheezing, though in the absence of wheezing and a quiet chest is indicative of a very serious attack. People with a primary hyperventilation (i.e what you called "psychogenic") syndrome will not be desaturating on room air(on pulse oxymeter), while a person with an asthma attack can be. Also, a person with an asthma attack will, not surprisingly, have a history of asthma.
In the hospital you have the luxury of things like arterial blood gases and chest x-ray to help with the differentiation. In general, if you see someone who is in respiratory distress regardless of the cause, it will almost never hurt to slap some oxygen and a pulse oximeter on the person before more definitive management can be made.

it may experience a similar, IF the panic impacts your respiration. bronchial asthma is extremely actual, you experience such as you're no longer getting sufficient air, while certainly, your lungs are not letting each and every of the air out once you exhale...believe me this would reason panic. The question is which comes first: The actual symptom, or the emotional one? A panic attack is of psychological beginning place, the actual indicators follow. bronchial asthma is actual, and psych reactions would follow. additionally, panic attack can show up in a good variety of diverse actual strategies to boot to respiration. terrific to have respiration try carried out at your regular practitioner's, and talk over with a counselor on the subject of the conceivable panic assaults.
