Is pneumonia developed too far?
Hi,
This is the third time I've had pneumonia in the past 10 years. I went to the doctor on Monday morning because I had a terrible chesty cough, difficulty breathing and I felt very unwell.
She tried to keep me out of the hospital as there are so many infections in there at the moment I might get worse, and she gave me steroids, antibiotics and nebules.
It's now thursday and she has put me on extra steroid nebules, and I have used a full set of 'combi' nebules. I have been taking 5 steroids a day and 3 antibiotics along with the nebuliser every 6 hours.
I have to go in for a chest X-ray tomorrow to the hospital. I have been up to the doctor 3 times a day since monday so she can listen to my chest. Basically I am just wondering if it normally takes this long to clear when treating at home, as last two times I was on an IV drip in the hospital. Also, I cant cough up any phlegm and when I told her this today she looked kind of worried. I am getting a little better, but I am still coughing bad, and at times I find it hard to take a proper breath.
I'm 18 years old and I'm sporty and active. If anyone has any information that could help me figure out if you think there is something else there, or if this is normal please comment. I will really appreciate it.

Sounds like you need to be in the hospital again before things get out of hand. You should tell the doctor that your treatment, while helpful, has not solved your problem, that you still have symptoms.
Sounds like it would be useful to find out why this is hanging on so long, too. That would be possible to do in the hospital where they could look into your lungs with a lighted scope. That can't be done at the doctor's office.
I'm sure the doctor has also thought about sending you to a pulmonary specialist. That would be a good idea at this point. You sound like you have a chronic lung disease, such as emphysema. It is possible to inherit lung diseases, but the specialist can tell you for sure. I'm not telling you have a lung disease, I'm just saying you have to get an additional person to help you.
