How far is New Zealand from Australia?

Like in miles? I want to know if I can swim it, or maybe rent a boat if it's really far.

I'm gonna be in Australia and I thought it would be fun to go there too but the plane ticket is stupid expensive. They look like they are right next to each other.

Also a few other questions for my trip:

1. Do I need to worry about being robbed down there? I know everyone from Austrlia is related to criminals, but will they rob me? What if I carry a small knife, are they skidish since they are used to dealing with hard criminals?

2. I was planning on riding a kangaroo while I'm there, but I can't find a place to do it online? Am I wrong in thinking that there has to be a place that offers this?

3. Am I gonna get a headache because I'm gonna be upside down for a week?

4. Do I need to do anything different when flushing the toilet? Smeone told me it's backwards, but I don't quite know what that means?

5. Is there an Outback steak house there?

6. Is the great bear reef cool?

Thanks!

Update:

You cant google maps distances over a ocean
