Spanish - porque esta obligada?

  Lo pasé fatal porque ESTABA obligada a compartir con......................(past)

  Lo pasé fatal porque ESTOY obligada ...................(present but not so likely)

  I had a bad time because I HAD TO share with my 12-year old brother while my parents were in another room. (past)

  It seems to me that it can't be present.

  Polenta is right, you have a problem with the conjugation in your sentence. Apart from that, the difference between “esta” without accent and “está” with accent is this:

  Note: first of all let’s take the symbol “=” like “usually equivalent to” (you might find exemptions, remember you can't translate form Spanish to English or vice versa by mean of replacing words one by one without the risk of making mistakes)

  Esta= it/this in Spanish for femenine nouns (remember that, unlike in English, nouns have gender in Spanish)

  Some examples:

  Esta mujer = This woman

  Esta camisa = This shirt

  Esta almohada = This pillow

  …………………………………………………..

  Está = is (only in some cases, for others uses: es = is)

  Some examples:

  Ella está sola = She is alone

  El está aburrido = He is borred

  In addition to this:

  Este = it/this (masculine version)

  Some examples:

  Este hombre = This man

  Este zapato = This shoe

  Este colchón = This matress

  ……………………………………………………...

  Este = East (same spelling, same pronuntiation, different meaning)

  How would you say in Spanish: “This truck is going eastward by this highway”?

  …well a possible translation would be:

  “Este ” camión “está ” yendo hacia el “este ” por “esta ” autopista.

  Weird, isn’t it?
