How do you become a park ranger?

I've found some information but it was a little confusing. How can you get started? How hard it is to become a mounted park ranger? I have a degree in education, will that help me at all?

  • State or National Park Ranger? Each state has different requirements for their departments, but for the National Park Service, you apply as for any other federal law enforcement position and then attend their "academy" (Usually at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, in Brunswick, GA.) A degree is nice, but not necessary for most positions. https://www.nps.gov/aboutus/workwithus.htm has lots of info and is presented quite simply. (Click on the "apply" picture and it will explain how to find a job with them.) BTW: I haven't seen any Rangers in the National Parks on horseback as they need to cover large areas quickly and thus use 4x4 vehicles, but there may be a few locations where they are still used. (Even the U.S. Border Patrol still has uses for horse patrols in some areas.)

....I am a retired police officer. I retired as a sergeant, after 29 years, from a very large department, about 12,000 officers. I was a patrol officer for 4 years in a very diverse area. I was a tactical officer in the high rise project areas of my city. We called it vertical patrol in that we walked the the stairways of the high rises most of the time. I did that for 5 years and was promoted by test to detective. I worked violent crime (homicide, sex, officer involved shootings, robbery, kidnapping, serious non property incidents) for 11 years until I was promoted to sergeant. I worked as a street supervisor, a bicycle patrol supervisor and a desk sergeant/watch commander.

During my time as a tactical officer and a detective I was a unit representative for the police union.

I have a B.A in English and an M.S. in Law Enforcement Administration....

  • Get a degree and have an intense interests in associating with becoming a ranger as much as possible.

  • Impossible as most if not all now use motor vehicles as we are now in the 21th century!
