How do you simplify this problem?

simplify: 4√8 • 5√3 I keep getting 40√6 and its wrong. What am I doing wrong?

  • You are correct.

Is the 'correct' answer a printed one in a book?

  • Easiest way to do it is multiply the outsides then the insides which gives you

    20(square root)24

    Then simplify

    20(square root) 6 • 4

    40(square root)6

It looks like you were trying to simplify them first which doesn't work for some reason

  • = (4√8) * (5√3)

    = (4 * 5) * (√8) * (√3)

    = (4 * 5) * [√(4 * 2)] * (√3)

    = (4 * 5) * [(√4) * (√2)] * (√3)

    = (4 * 5) * [2 * (√2)] * (√3)

    = (4 * 5) * 2 * (√2) * (√3)

    = (4 * 5 * 2) * √(2 * 3)

    = 40 * √6
